Why U-Pick Peonies Will Open Later This Year

At Hidden Springs Peony Farm, each season tells a different story. After three absolutely beautiful peony seasons in a row, this year has reminded us just how much farming depends on the weather.

In early to mid-May, we experienced several nights with temperatures at or below freezing, arriving at a particularly vulnerable time for our peonies. By then, many of the plants had already broken dormancy and their buds were actively developing. Unfortunately, a large number of those early buds were damaged by the cold and will not bloom this season.

While peonies are hardy perennials, their developing buds can still be sensitive to sudden late-spring freezes. Some varieties escaped the damage better than others, but many of our early and mid-season blooms were significantly affected. Walking the fields after the cold snap was heartbreaking, especially after watching the plants emerge so beautifully this spring.

Right now, we are in week three of the bloom cycle. Many of the deep red varieties are currently blooming, and the coral varieties are not far behind. Normally, our coral peonies are some of the most spectacular plants in the field. For example, a mature Coral Charm peony plant would typically produce two dozen or more blooms in a season. This year, many of those same plants only have a handful of blooms. The plants themselves are healthy, but many of the buds simply did not survive the freeze.

This is, of course, part of farming. Every year brings new lessons, challenges, and surprises. Sometimes nature gives us abundance, and other times it reminds us that we are never fully in control. Although disappointing, we are incredibly grateful for the support, patience, and understanding shown by our customers and visitors.

Because of the reduced bloom count this season, we have made the difficult decision to delay opening our fields for U-pick (Pick Your Own) peonies until after our scheduled events conclude on June 14. We want to ensure there are enough flowers available for guests to enjoy later in the season and to allow the remaining buds time to fully develop.

Beginning June 14, our Pick Your Own fields will officially open with peonies available at: 10 stems for $30

Although U-pick will be delayed, visitors are still welcome to walk through the fields and enjoy the beauty that is blooming. Even in a challenging year, the peony field remains a peaceful and beautiful place to experience the season. Historically, the best time to see the fields in bloom is during the first two to three weeks of June, and we are hopeful there will still be plenty of color and fragrance to enjoy.

We also expect to have limited pre-picked peony bouquets available from the field as harvest allows, though it is still a bit early for consistent availability at this time.

Thank you again for your grace, encouragement, and support of our small farm. Agriculture is always an act of hope, and we are thankful to share another season with all of you.
