Frequently Asked Questions

  • Peonies are shipped in the fall starting late September, which is when the buds are mature for harvest and the roots are dormant. Shipping continues through October and sometimes into early November depending on the weather and field conditions.

Credit cards are processed at the time the order is placed to reserve your plants which are limited to the stock available that year and to send you a confirmation and a copy of your receipt. Check your spam folder if you do not receive one immediately after placing your order. Immediate processing allows your encrypted order information to be purged and no longer stored to provide the highest level of security. We feel this is the best option for our customers and for us as merchants.

We will never substitute varieties. We suggest you place an order early before rare and high demand varieties sell out well before peony bloom season.

  • At this time, we only ship to the 48 contiguous states. That means, we currently do not ship to Alaska or Hawaii. We hope to be able to in the near future!

  • Unfortunately, we do not ship outside of the United States at the moment. However, we are looking into this options in the near future.

  • Often we do have opportunities for both potted and bare root peonies wholesale. Please email Laura (Laura@HiddenSpringsPeonyFarm.com) for current availability.

  • Bare root peonies are fresh dug from our fields when the growing and flower buds have matured and the roots are dormant. They are washed, divided and packed without soil since they will be going directly into your garden. This is just like tulip and other fall planted flowers which make their new roots in the fall. Peonies behave more like bulbs because they produce their new roots in the fall when the soil is cold. Once you receive your peonies they should not be stored for more than 72 hours because they don't have the protective skin that a tulip or daffodil bulb has and must be planted immediately and typically begin rooting within 24 hours of being planted.

Peonies make their best roots in the fall in cold soils and that is the best time for planting them. Instructions are included on the website and with each order for your reference.

  • Peonies grow in cold climates from USDA growing zone 3-8.  We no longer recommend that gardeners plant peonies in zones 9-10. If you choose to experiment it is at your own risk and expense.

  • Our shipping season starts in late September, which means roots will begin arriving by Priority Mail towards the end of September and early October. If you have specific shipping date need please let us know at the time of ordering. We are not able to change shipping dates after that. Please have your garden ready for them when they arrive. You can still plant as long as the soil is not frozen but the sooner the better and we recommend all peonies be in the ground by Mid- October at the latest.

  • We sure do! Scroll a little further down this page for a direct link, or look under “PEONIES” in the website menu.

  • The deadline to order peonies for the regular shipping season varies on availability. Be sure to follow us on Facebook or Instagram (links are provided at the bottom of this page) for realtime updates on order deadlines.

  • Yes! We grow more than 600 varieties here on our farm in Spring Grove, MN and dig them to ship when they are ready to divide. As we add to our collection or to meet high demand, some roots are sourced from additional growers in the United States.

  • Peonies take 4 or more years to mature before harvest so we encourage you to order during the regular ordering season for the best selection. If the roots are unavailable due to conditions beyond our control we will issue a refund, we do not back order or substitute.

  • Not always because that depends on your growing skills and the fall and winter weather conditions. How well you select the planting spot, prepare the soil, water and care for them may affect their ability to bloom. Your close attention to proper soil preparation, planting and watering the first fall and the next growing season is critical for success.

  • We ship first quality roots with 3 - 5 growing buds (eyes) for all garden peony (lactiflora) varieties we sell. Species and a few of the hybrids may have only 2 - 4 buds because of their normal habit of growth and biology. We have many repeat customers that tell us how happy they are with their plants. Peony root size depends on the variety and has nothing to do with its ability to grow.

  • No, we only have the online version of the catalog which allows us to offer limited varieties that a print format could not.

You may download a PDF catalog here.

  • Yes, we are happy to provide this service. Once an order has been received and processed there is a 15% restocking and processing fee for cancellations received in writing or by e-mail before May 1.

After that date the cancellation fee is 50%. These fees also apply to orders placed at the nursery.

  • We have labor costs, credit card, banking fees and handling expenses, such as labels, packing slips and field labels that are incurred when you place an order. When you place an order for a finite quantity product like plants that take years to grow we guarantee that we will reserve your plant and not sell it to anyone else.

That means we lose the ability to offer it to another customer. When orders are cancelled after the ordering system has closed for the year or plants are dug they must be replanted and grow for another 4 or more years until ready to harvest and offer for sale again.

  • We will make a one time change to ship your order to a friend or family member as a gift if you are no longer able to accept the order provided the mailing address is located in the lower 48 States and we receive notice before August 31.

  • Yes! We do offer free pickup for bare root peonies bought online.

During the checkout process, select local pickup.

  • Returned packages with no forwarding address on file or an incorrect mailing address packages are considered abandoned. It is your responsibility to pay any additional shipping costs to redirect your order.

Please email us with your change of address BEFORE June 30th if you paid to have your order shipped.
