How to Plant Bare Root Fruit Trees
Planting bare root fruit trees can be a rewarding experience that leads to delicious homegrown fruit in the future. Here is a list of instructions to help you successfully plant your bare root fruit trees:
Prepare the Planting Site: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil for your fruit tree. Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the tree's roots without bending or crowding them.
Soak the Roots: Before planting, soak the bare roots of the fruit tree in water for a few hours to rehydrate them and promote healthy growth.
Position the Tree: Place the tree in the center of the hole, ensuring that the roots are spread out and not twisted. The graft union (the swollen area where the tree was grafted) should be above the soil level when planted.
Backfill the Hole: Fill the hole with soil, gently tamping it down to eliminate air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
Mulch and Water: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water the tree regularly, especially during the first growing season, to help it establish a strong root system.
Prune and Support: Trim any damaged or crossing branches, and use a stake to support the tree.
Protect from Critters: We recommend deer fencing to keep your tree from becoming a midnight snack. White corregated plastic tubing also works well around the trunk to keep rabbits from nibbling at the trees tender bark, especially in the winter season.
Monitor and Care: Keep an eye on your fruit tree as it grows, providing regular water, fertilizer, and pest control as needed. With proper care, your bare root fruit tree will flourish and reward you with a bountiful harvest in the future.
