Peony roots are dug and shipped as bare roots in the fall when the plants are dormant and the buds are mature. Shipping generally starts in late September and continues into October. On rare occasions depending on weather and volume, shipping can continue into November. Planting the bare roots directly in the ground when you receive them in fall gives your peonies an excellent opportunity to develop its root system heading into the winter season.
Yes, payment is taken at time of order. This is to reserve your peonies and prevent them from being sold to another buyer. Many of the highly desired peony varieties sell out well before bloom season.
When you receive your order, roots should be planted in the ground immediately. Peonies should not be grown in pots. We guarantee you will receive a healthy, live peony root ready for planting in the ground. If this is not the case, please ship the root back to Hidden Springs Peony Farm within 48 hours in its original packaging as received for a refund.

We rotate through over 600 varieties of peony roots, carefully selecting those that have matured enough for division every season. That means, the varieties available this year may not be available for several years to come.
