The Secret to Stunning Peony Pairings

This week’s article is inspired by a customer question, which I always love getting.

“I would appreciate suggestions on what perennial I might plant in front or behind our lineup of peonies.”

- Cecilia

Peonies, of course, are gorgeous on their own. But pair them with some other spring bloomers and something magical happens.

A spring garden is just the boost we all need after a long winter. Here are a few of my favorite peony pairs that also bloom in spring.

  • Bleeding Heart

  • Spring bulbs like Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Crocus and more!

  • Spring-blooming Allium

  • Iris

  • Columbine

  • Foxglove

  • Baptisia

  • Virginia Anemone

  • Spring-blooming Clematis

  • Wild Lupine

  • Virginia Bluebells

  • Violas

If you’re looking for some suggestions on peony pairs that keep the color coming after peony season is over, try these!

  • Lavender

  • Poppies

  • Summer and fall-blooming Allium

  • Russian Sage

  • Coneflowers

  • Summer-blooming Clematis

  • Hydrangeas

  • Delphinium

  • Masterwort

  • Roses

And finally, if you’re looking for some ground cover around your peonies to keep weeds down but keep the peonies in full focus, try these!

  • Snow in Summer

  • Ajuga

  • Creeping Thyme

  • Sedums

  • Sun-loving Hostas

  • Sage

  • Pachysandra

Which combinations have you discovered for your spring space? Please share them!

The ideas are almost endless and so specific to the personality of each gardener. My style is to choose one or two extra perennials that bloom at different times to pair with peonies for maximum impact all season long. And I highly recommend planting daffodils among the peonies to get the bloom season started as early as possible with deer and rabbit resistance.

Thanks Cecilia!
